Cassia siamea Lam, also known as Senna siamea, is one of the native Thai vegetables that have some medicinal properties. It has been traditionally used for liver problems, urticaria, loss of appetite from gastrointestinal trouble and rhinitis. Young leaves and flower extracts of C. siamea contain a type of chromone called barakol, and other substances (e.g. anthraquinone, alkaloid, etc.), which have laxative properties and are also used for insomnia and anxiety. In 1998, a product was approved in Thailand named ‘Cassia siamea tablet: Baracol’, which contains dried young leaves of C. siamea, and was manufactured through good manufacturing practice (GMP) processes.
